Client Background
As the world embraces connected cars and software-defined vehicles, demand for advanced in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems is projected to grow at a double-digit compound annual growth rate through 2027. A leading global supplier of automotive solutions looked to capitalize on this demand by creating a reusable Android Automotive infotainment development platform that would scale to serve multiple OEM programs and enable it to leverage Android’s deep customization capabilities.
This approach would help the supplier scale its capabilities in new technologies quickly and with less investment. It would also empower the supplier’s Tier-1 manufacturing customers to differentiate themselves through advanced infotainment systems. By deploying a best-in-class cockpit domain controller platform that incorporated the latest technologies and features, the supplier would position itself – and its clients – to beat the competition.
Solution
Mindful of the need to integrate various functions across the in-vehicle (IVI) experience, Wipro implemented a software-integration strategy that developed middleware components for communication between apps from various software vendors. The solution is a first-of-its-kind cockpit controller platform where digital ecosystem partners can collaborate to bring in their best-in-class features. The integrated platform also had the unique ability to develop feature-rich human machine interface (HMI) for complex applications such as Rightware’s Kanzi HMI framework and TomTom’s Navigation kit.
By enabling a “connected cockpit,” the supplier’s platform would empower automotive manufacturers to dramatically improve the driver experience and create new points of differentiation. Its user-assisted features enabled functions like smart weather and navigation, while “continuous learning” further enabling profile personalization over time. Personalization was additionally redefined by integrating features such as “voice as key fob” and “phone as key-fob.”
These features – developed using a fully scalable and customizable platform – enabled the supplier to stand out in the highly competitive software market and help its clients deploy differentiated in-vehicle infotainment systems. To share this vision and platform, Wipro provided additional support by helping the supplier demonstrate its reference platform during multiple events and road shows for automotive OEMs around the globe.
Business Impact
With its new platform, the automotive solution provider reduced time to market by 35% and, per OEM feedback, reduced production costs by more than 20%. In addition, the jointly developed integration features demonstrated next-generation platform-development capabilities, helping to improve the supplier’s leadership position in various industry reports about the digital cockpit sector.
