Ambition

Client’s legacy monitoring and planning platform was approaching end of license, leading to rising maintenance and renewal costs. The system was rigid, difficult to extend, and heavily vendor‑locked, limiting the client’s ability to innovate or respond rapidly to evolving operational demands.

The client’s ambition was to move away from this constrained legacy environment and adopt a future-ready, cost-effective digital platform. The new solution was expected to deliver real-time visibility and control of gas transmission operations, support commercial optimization, and significantly improve operational planning. The client also wanted a seamless user experience across devices and an extensible architecture that could scale with future requirements without adding operational or licensing complexity.

Action

Wipro partnered with the client to design and implement a modern digital platform that replaced the legacy systems with a scalable and modular architecture built using a modern technology stack, including Angular and React for the user interface, Java Spring Boot and REST APIs for backend services, and cloud infrastructure for scalability and resilience.

Real-time data from SCADA systems and gas transmission sources was integrated into the platform, enabling continuous monitoring and control of the network. This provided operators, network controllers, and commercial planners with a single, unified view of operations, allowing them to make faster and better-informed decisions.

A strong focus was placed on user experience, resulting in an intuitive and responsive interface that worked seamlessly across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. The platform’s modular design ensured rapid development cycles, supported continuous enhancement, and reduced dependency on monolithic systems. In parallel, Wipro enabled the decommissioning of multiple legacy applications and monitoring solutions, significantly simplifying the client’s technology landscape.

Ambitions Realized

The transformation delivered substantial operational and financial benefits. By retiring four legacy systems and eliminating high-cost middleware dependencies, the client achieved operational expense savings of approximately £1.2 million over a five-year period. Licensing and support costs were reduced by 50 percent, while improvements in system manageability and reliability led to a 20 percent reduction in data loss incidents.

The highly customized platform, tailored to nearly 60 percent of the client’s specific operational requirements, empowered gas system operators and planners with real-time insights and enhanced control. As a result, the organization improved operational efficiency, strengthened decision-making, and established a resilient digital foundation capable of supporting future innovation and growth.

Today, the platform serves as a critical enabler of the client’s operational excellence and long-term energy transition strategy, delivering scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency across its gas transmission network.
