Quantum computing leverages the physics of quantum mechanics to process information at unprecedented speeds. While yet to be commercialized, the technology is the subject of intense and increasing investment from a variety of major organizations including Google, IBM, and Microsoft and is expected to be a major driver of business transformation within the next decade. Google’s newest research quantum computer, for example, has performed in under five minutes a standard benchmark computation that would take today’s supercomputers 10 septillion years.
If the benefits of quantum computing are clear, so are the dangers. Most significant is the likely impact of quantum computing on cryptographic security. At their current rate of evolution, fault-tolerant quantum computers will be able to break most existing algorithms used for encrypting digital assets by 2030-33. It is therefore essential that organizations be prepared if they are to reap the benefits of quantum computing while minimizing its threats.
