Bangalore, India and London, UK - August 2, 2013:
Wipro Ltd. (NYSE:WIT), a leading Global Information Technology, Consulting and Outsourcing company, recently saw the first batch of UK engineering students and graduates arrive in India for a 9 month programme as part of its ‘India Gateway’ internship initiative.
Representatives from Wipro, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) held a formal induction ceremony in July at the Chelsea Football Club in London for the 19 UK engineering students and graduates who have arrived in Bangalore for a comprehensive information technology internship.
As part of the ‘India Gateway’ internship pilot programme, Wipro is giving this group of students and graduates an opportunity to spend 9 months in India to gain hands-on industry experience.
The programme is supported and jointly funded by UKIERI, the UK India Education and Research Initiative.
UK’s Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts said: "Internships overseas offer the chance to experience new cultures, and understand different ways of working. To compete in the global race the UK must create graduates with a global outlook that makes them more attractive to potential employers and benefits the wider economy."
This UK-India collaborative training program will involve a three-month technology induction course followed by a three month on-the-job training with Wipro teams. Then, in the last three months, the interns will work on live projects.
The internship will allow the students to experience and learn about a new culture and develop the business and technical skills necessary to successfully work and collaborate in a globalised work environment. The course – a mix of classroom and practical training – is aimed at making students employable across the globe.
Adam Thilthorpe, Director of Professionalism, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, adds: “As the Chartered Institute for IT, we are pleased to recognise this innovative new programme. It is vital that we bridge the gap between academia and a career in IT and encourage more young people to consider a career in IT to ensure that we can continue to meet the demand for IT professionals by businesses across the globe which is only set to continue to grow – IT is the profession of the future.”
“Our India Gateway internship programme is aimed at developing the skills and increasing the overall size of the employable talent pool for the IT industry. With this initiative, we are hoping to provide bright graduates with an opportunity to kick-start successful careers in this field by equipping them with the necessary skill-sets and real-time exposure to the business environment. The initiative is perfectly suited to those students striving for a competitive advantage in the global workplace, but also seeking new cultural experiences,” said Saurabh Govil, Senior Vice President and Global Head – HR, Wipro.
Tahim Choudhury from Middlesex University who has come to India for the internship said, “My expectations are to excel throughout this programme and I believe that with the platform Wipro is providing, this is achievable, and this will also boost my professional growth.”
