July 06, 2015 : Gary Reiner left his position as CIO of General Electric Co. in 2010, but as an operating partner at investment firm General Atlantic, he can't stop channeling his inner IT executive. Mr. Reiner says the key to his approach in scouting promising high-growth companies is helping those companies understand how a CIO thinks. "A CIO wants to make sure you can deliver things on budget and on schedule and wants to migrate from worrying about traditional stuff to getting much more involved in the business," he said.
When looking at cloud companies, for example, a key litmus test for Mr. Reiner is whether it has the technology and the fortitude, financial and otherwise, to, ultimately, go against Amazon.com and other public cloud providers, he said. "That's how a CIO will compare his or her alternatives when making a decision on what infrastructure will be," he said. "Explicitly or internally, that's a filter."
