Ambition
Since 1995, American public-transit ridership has grown faster than the population itself, signalling escalating future demand. To proactively address this, a leading U.S. public-transport agency set out to modernize its infrastructure. The agency aimed to improve operational efficiency, enhance agility, and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by leveraging a modern, cloud-based platform. A critical requirement was to ensure that mission-critical applications like Oracle PeopleSoft remained fully operational throughout the transformation.
Action
Wipro initiated the transformation by conducting a thorough assessment of the agency’s infrastructure and strategic plans, uncovering legacy servers, outdated operating systems, and database versions approaching end-of-support. To overcome these challenges and future-proof operations, Wipro leveraged Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), relieving the transport agency of the constraints of aging on-premises systems while enhancing operational agility.
A comprehensive migration strategy was executed, which included upgrading databases and transitioning application, web, and database servers from on-premises data centers to OCI. The operating system was modernized from Windows to Linux 7, and Oracle PeopleSoft Tools were upgraded to the latest version. To further strengthen business continuity, Wipro deployed its proprietary Disaster Recovery as-a-Service solution on OCI, significantly reducing reliance on traditional on-premises disaster recovery systems.
As part of ongoing Business-as-Usual (BAU) operations, Wipro continued to deliver system upgrades that improved infrastructure, applications, and user experience. The modernization of the operating system and database resulted in 20% improvement in performance. Upgrades to PeopleSoft and PeopleTools introduced advanced features such as Fluid UI, REST API support, and improved analytics. Additionally, HR and Finance processes were optimized with smart templates and real-time validations, while expanded integration capabilities enabled seamless connectivity with external systems. The upgrade of the application, database, and operating system in OCI was completed by December 2024, resulting in a more secure, efficient, and user-friendly environment.
Ambition Realized
Wipro helped successfully modernize the client’s infrastructure, enabling enhanced scalability and operational agility through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The transition reduced total cost of ownership by moving to an OPEX model with 24% reduction in cost. The response time for refreshing and cloning Oracle application environments was also improved, allowing for faster deployment of new features. Wipro’s upgrades streamlined HR, Finance, and analytics processes, resulting in more efficient operations and better decision-making. The modernization also delivered a superior user experience through an improved UI and expanded integration capabilities, ensuring seamless connectivity with external systems. With Wipro’s expertise, the transport agency now benefits from a secure, efficient, and future-ready environment that has 99% availability and supports its mission to meet the growing demands of public transit.
