Technology foundations for Agentic AI are advancing rapidly, but enterprise readiness is struggling to keep pace. The challenge is no longer simply building agents. It is creating the organisational, data, governance and technology foundations needed to scale them responsibly.

The State of Agentic AI 2026 explores this gap through research spanning 72 enterprises, 580 AI use cases and 1,088 public sources. It examines what separates enterprises experimenting with agents from those preparing to scale, revealing the capabilities and disciplines required to move beyond pilots and build Agentic AI that can operate responsibly, sustainably and at enterprise scale.

The next phase of AI is not about technology

Over the past two years, organizations have invested heavily in AI models, platforms, copilots, and infrastructure.

Yet as Agentic AI moves from experimentation to execution, a new challenge is emerging.

The organizations making the greatest progress are not necessarily those with the most advanced technology. They are the ones building governance frameworks, operational discipline, trusted data foundations, and repeatable mechanisms for value realization.

The State of Agentic AI 2026 reveals a clear gap between deploying agents and building the readiness required to scale them.

What the research reveals

The research evaluates enterprise readiness through Wipro's 4M framework:

1. Operating Model

How ownership, accountability, governance, and oversight are established across the AI lifecycle.

2. Method

How AI opportunities are identified, prioritized, measured, and managed.

3. Machinery

The technology, security, infrastructure, and data foundations supporting AI.

4. Mindset

The culture, skills, change management practices, and workforce readiness that enable adoption.

The findings show that technology readiness is advancing faster than organizational readiness, creating new risks and opportunities for enterprise leaders.

Four findings every executive should know

1. Organizations are deploying agents faster than they are governing them

Only 29% of organizations have both agent development and governance discipline in place.

2. Productivity is being proven. Growth remains largely aspirational.

While revenue growth is frequently cited as an ambition, only 4% of organizations publicly demonstrate measurable AI-driven growth outcomes.

3. Data readiness is becoming the critical bottleneck.

Data quality and readiness now trail infrastructure readiness across industries, limiting the ability to scale autonomous agents.

4. No organization has fully crossed the finish line.

Despite rapid adoption, no enterprise in this research reached Frontrunner status and none qualified as fully Agent-Run.

About the research

The State of Agentic AI 2026 combines three evidence streams:

  • Direct enterprise assessments

  • Senior consultant perspectives

  • Outside-in research and public disclosures

The analysis spans:

  • 72 enterprises

  • 7 industries

  • 580 catalogued AI use cases

  • 1,088 public evidence sources

Findings are anonymized and assessed through a consistent framework to provide a directional view of enterprise readiness and Agentic AI maturity.
