Imagine stepping into a new workplace and feeling an immediate sense of belonging. That’s what happened to me at Wipro. During my onboarding, I encountered a thoughtful and optional self-identification process that wasn’t just a formality, it was a gesture of genuine inclusivity. The choice was mine to disclose my sexual orientation, and knowing that this information would remain confidential and be used solely to connect me with supportive resources was incredibly reassuring. That simple act made me realize how powerful it is to feel seen and accepted from day one.

Why Intersectionality is the Heartbeat of Inclusion

At Wipro, with its tapestry of over 236,000 diverse individuals, intersectionality is more than a concept—it’s our lived experience. It’s about recognizing that each of us is a mosaic of identities, and these layers shape our unique challenges and strengths.

Consider a colleague of mine—a brilliant engineer, a woman of color, and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. Her journey is a testament to the multifaceted nature of identity and the resilience it fosters. By understanding and valuing these intersections, we create a space where everyone can contribute their fullest selves.

As Verna Myers beautifully said, “Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.” Recognizing and valuing these intersections allows everyone to feel not just invited but truly part of the community. If we don’t pay enough attention to and care for intersectionality, some of us who are the most vulnerable may fall through the cracks.

Embracing intersectionality means taking concrete steps

  1. Listen Deeply: Truly hearing each other’s stories helps us understand the layers of experience that shape our colleagues’ lives.
  2. Champion Inclusivity: Advocate for inclusive policies and environments that recognize and honor these intersecting identities.
  3. Be Vulnerable: By showing our own vulnerabilities, we create a safe space for others to do the same. This mutual trust and openness unleash our collective potential and foster a truly supportive workplace.

As we celebrate Pride Month, let’s commit to making Wipro a place where everyone can shine with pride, every single day. By embracing each other’s full selves and the beautiful complexity of our identities, we’re not just building a better workplace, we’re building a brighter, more inclusive future together. Let’s embrace our vulnerabilities, support each other wholeheartedly, and create a space where every one of us can truly thrive.
