As part of Pride Month, I wanted to share a personal reflection on what allyship and belonging mean to me.
Throughout my life and career, I have experienced what it feels like to step into new environments, navigate change, and find my place among unfamiliar people and cultures. Like many of us, there have been times when I questioned where I belonged or how I would fit in. Those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of creating opportunities through hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to learn.
I have been fortunate to encounter people throughout my life and career who have shown kindness, encouragement, and a genuine sense of inclusion. Their support left a lasting impression on me and reinforced the positive impact that a welcoming and supportive environment can have.
Above all, my parents have been my greatest role models, and I am incredibly grateful for the values they instilled in me and for the person I am today. They taught me the importance of treating everyone with respect, embracing differences, showing kindness, and ensuring that others feel welcomed and valued. These principles continue to guide both my personal life and my approach to leadership.
These experiences have shaped both who I am and how I approach my role as an HR Director. They have reinforced my belief that everyone deserves to feel valued, respected, and able to be themselves. A sense of belonging is not something we should take for granted, and we all have a role to play in creating it for others.
That is why Pride Month resonates with me. Whilst my own story is not an LGBTQIA+ one, I understand the importance of feeling accepted and included for who you are. Pride is a reminder that everyone deserves to be respected, supported, and celebrated, regardless of who they love, how they identify, or how they express themselves.
Pride Month is also an opportunity to reflect on how we create a workplace where people do not have to ask themselves, "Do I belong here?" Our goal should be to foster a culture where everyone feels welcome, valued, and able to bring their authentic selves to work without fear of judgement or exclusion. Belonging should not be something people have to earn or prove; it should be an integral part of how we work together, support one another, and build our culture every day.
For me, allyship is about more than words. It is about creating environments where people feel safe to be themselves, where differences are recognised as strengths, and where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, grow, and succeed. We all come from different backgrounds and experiences, but we share a common need to feel respected, included, and valued.
My hope is that, during Pride Month and throughout the year, we continue to build workplaces and communities where everyone can say with confidence:
"I can be myself here. I belong here."
Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect.
