I am happy to share that Wipro was recently included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This index tracks the financial performance of 300+ sustainability-driven global companies. We were included in this list in our first attempt… something that makes each one of us proud!
The DJSI and other such indices and rankings are great examples of how companies are increasingly focusing on measuring, tracking and reporting progress around Sustainability and Diversity. It’s good to note that today the industry is placing greater importance to these factors and not just on profitability, efficiency and revenue, leading to a more holistic approach to growth.
Closer to home, our drive on sustainability has been a long and committed one. Under the Sustainability umbrella, Diversity is a critical component for us. As the organization has grown, the mosaic of the workforce has become more vivid and we have taken steps to chart the way towards a more balanced organization over the years.
Interestingly, Diversity has evolved from just being about Gender Diversity to include Enabling Equal Opportunity, Cultural Diversity and Inclusive Growth. With no one factor more important than the other, emphasis and action needs to be taken at each level within the organization for the company to reach the goal it sets out for itself.
Transforming vision into action is the key - I had recently visited our Kolkata Development Center where I saw a perfect example of our Diversity charter in action. I met a group of visually impaired employees handling the transport help desk. The group handles nearly 140 calls per day updating employees on their pick up and drop timings while coordinating with the transport team and employees to ensure smooth functioning of the help desk. These employees deliver the service using special software that allows them to operate a PC and IT support infrastructure. The team was full of energy and enthusiasm and had turned around the satisfaction levels of the employees interacting with the help desk. Owing to the success of this initiative Wipro is now in the process of implementing this model across six more development centers in India.
A great example of creating equal opportunity for all!
As part of the continued drive to share Wipro’s thoughts, actions and examples on diversity and as the executive sponsor of diversity within the organization I am hosting a twitter conference #DiversityatWipro on 4th October, 3 p.m to 4 p.m. I look forward to connecting with you.
