The last two decades have been nothing short of an economic renaissance for our country, and while India Inc. has been building a reputation for delivering world-class products and services, a silent revolution has also been under way: wherein there is a deep realization of the immense economic potential of half of humanity: women!Gender diversity today is no longer a corporate responsibility charter but a sound business practice, with independent studies clearly pointing out the direct co-relation between diversity and profitability of companies globally… a fact that no one can ignore. This is especially true for the IT services industry where talent availability is a key factor for growth, with industry continuously looking at ways to increase the talent pool.

The momentum of India’s economic progress is both a matter of celebration and a matter of concern. India’s progress stands threatened by a number of factors that businesses and government must note and address. Primary amongst these are:

I recently traveled to South Africa in the middle of the World Cup fever to attend the Fortune Global Forum in Cape Town. It was my first visit to South Africa and I was looking forward to being part of the World Cup celebrations, even if it was only as an onlooker and also as someone speaking at the forum.

Earth Day is upon us again. Just like festivals, the Earth Day too has a habit of coming into our lives on the same day every year – April 22. It’s a day to celebrate Earth’s environment and promise to preserve it for future generations. But, this day also forces us to face the stark reality of how we have brought the world to the brink of a disaster. It’s a day that compels us to re-evaluate the choices we have made in the past and think about the kind of world we are leaving for our children. It’s a day meant to inspire confidence but ends up have the exact opposite effect.

I had just come back from a day trip to Mumbai where I got a chance to meet some customers at a closed door event. We had spoken about multiple issues and I was in the process of sharing this with a colleague of mine when, out of nowhere, I get asked the question, “What does the Women’s Day mean to you?”

I recently shared my views on the Budget of 2010 presented by our Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee with one of the business newspapers. I thought of sharing my views with you as well. 26th Feb 2010 will be remembered as one of those days when a progressive budget was outlined for a resurgent Indian economy – A populist budget that struck a chord with the ‘Aam Adami’ (Common Man) by recalibrating income tax slabs while maintaining a strong focus on the industry especially infrastructure, a budget that aimed at propelling India to a 9% growth rate from the current levels of 7.2%. This budget has set the foundation for a strong economic performance without losing sight of the key issues that need to be tackled, like the fiscal deficit. The finance minister plans to bring it down to 4.1% of GDP by 2012-13 setting a clear roadmap on fiscal consolidation… A tough challenge, but doable.

The annual congregation of more than 2000 top minds from Business, Government, Academia, Artists and Social pressure groups concluded in Davos a couple of weeks back. This year saw a refreshing approach to the agenda wherein “Improving the State of the World” was the central theme adopted. This was a clear departure from the trade centric agenda of last year and issues like sustainability, climate change, education and health were discussed along with banking reforms, trade and globalization.
