Research firm Gartner in its strategic planning assumption predicted that data discovery will be a different market category by 2017. However the real question to ask is whether the data discovery wave has already arrived?
The explosion of data continues both in terms of volume and variety making data management challenging like never before. This is taking technological expertise required to draw insights to a whole new level. The availability of multitude of analytics platforms with limited applications that are complicated and time consuming make the analytics landscape of organizations further murky.
A comprehensive analytics platform that can integrate enterprise data while maintaining speed and agility without involving any capital expenditures seems like a deal cut out for the market. Transferring the ability to explore data for hidden patterns and trends without compromising on data integrity has justifiably enthused practitioners and business user. And this is where data discovery platforms comes in.
The scope and scale offered in a data discovery with ready to use applications for businesses offers a plug and play approach where business users can use their discretion to choose the most appropriate tools for themselves. It has been argued that visualization and data discovery are pitching for the same spot but in reality data discovery goes way further in adding value across the Data-Information-Insight Supply chain from data acquisition and extraction to management and through to impact.
Advanced data discovery systems are well equipped to automatically extract and organize metadata categories, dimensions and terms while integrating data, from structured or unstructured content such as emails and PDFs. It also elicits a more effective approach in data management by revealing hidden relationships between data elements resulting in “cleaner” data. A data discovery system also ensures that the right data is being fed to the right people at the right time such that users can derive greater value from it.
The benefits of data discovery are as tangible as they get and go far beyond just speed, visibility and ease of use. The ability of data discovery platforms to fit right into the voids that contemporary analytics platforms are exposed to is the primary reason for its rising acceptance in the market place. Since the impact is bound to ripple into the IT aspect, IT players are collaborating closely with businesses such that the full potential of their data can be harnessed.
Organizations are already embracing a holistic perspective towards big data technologies with data discovery being a definitive step towards future readiness to handle even larger volumes, varieties & velocities of data and still be able to translate it into meaningful actionable insights.
