According to a Forrester Research forecast, the infrastructure management market is expected to touch $180 billion by 2013. Cloud technologies are significantly contributing to this growth of the IT infrastructure management industry. I see a growing need in business leaders to " variabilize " their infrastructure costs; transformation of IT into " utility services " will be a key trend driven by this need and cloud computing plays a crucial role in this transformation. This resonates with the findings of our recent study on the 'Cloud Potential' which saw 43% of respondents believing that companies will fail to manage costs by not investing in the cloud. Enterprises can adopt three distinct approaches in accordance with their specific need and preparedness for adopting cloud computing.
Technologies like virtual links, cloud computing, and collaboration are already providing an advantage to enterprises by building scalable designs that respond to the dynamic market needs. As the cost structures of the enterprises become more variable, I believe that business models will become more resilient, with the suppliers and customers becoming more integrated. Cloud computing in any form – public, private or hybrid - can help transforming technology into a ubiquitous utility.
