Wherever I go and whomsoever I speak to, one word constantly lingers in the air…'Cloud'. Although this topic has been beaten to death in several forums, the customers are increasingly showing great interest to be an early adopter of this disruptive trend. Trends like this will require organizations to seriously look at IT consolidation, standardization and rationalization. Therefore, it's important that organizations are ready to take advantage and avoid high transition/migration costs as these trends mature.
2010 had been a big year in the build up and maturation of the cloud services delivery and consumption model. Research by key analyst firms shows a majority of users will be commencing private cloud projects before the end of 2011. With the promise of economic resurgence in 2011, CIOs are seeking new ways of delivering value to their business with Cloud being one of the most important levers. Forecasts of budget growth indicate that though the budget purse-strings will be loosed in 2011, each and every project must have a demonstrable ROI including cloud based projects. Through this blog post I will address a very important query - How can enterprises embark on the journey for the creation of private cloud?
Large and small enterprises alike must have a robust plan for embarking on a journey to the creation of a private cloud. The plan must address following elements:
- A thorough analysis of process and applications for security, latency, load variability, availability and inter-dependencies
- The above inter-dependencies must also be mapped to the infrastructure layer
- Subsequently, a heat-map must be built where process and app is mapped to as-is, Internal Private Cloud, Hosted Private Cloud and Public Cloud state.
The next key step in building a private cloud is to focus on ROI or TCO, and then finally it comes down to implementation, which must be preceded by a robust design including:
- Metering and charge-back
A key aspect is to take care of integration challenges and leverage the existing investments in the design stage itself. The above process/steps will ensure that customers have a smooth journey into cloud.
