Reliable ethernet switch architecture
Abstract Ethernet is one of the most common methods of networking computers in a LAN. Ethernet can handle about 10,000,000 bits-per-second and is compatible with almost any kind of computers. As Ethernet is being considered as the technology for end-to-end connectivity, service availability is becoming one of the fundamental requirements. Mission critical networks demand 24X7 availability, as network service non-availability will surely lead to loss in terms of productivity, sales and service.
In this white paper, we discuss various design solutions to provide fault tolerance and enhance service availability of an Ethernet switch. It also explains the requirements of a reliable Ethernet switch, its architecture and the benefits gained through a fault tolerant Ethernet solution.
