Abstract
This paper describes a standards based solution called GR-303 packet network solution or just GR-303 PNS, to support traditional, circuit-switched GR-303 Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) system over a packet network, using standard Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-IP interworking architectures. As a precursor to comprehend and appreciate GR-303 PNS better, an introduction to GR-303 DLC system and it's current deployment base is provided . To set the context for the proposed solution, the current role (network fit) of DLCs in Packet Access Network (PAN) is briefly examined. Illustrations of the different deployment scenarios (network configurations) for GR-303 PNS are followed by a description of the solution components, the high-level functional architecture for implementing the solution and the salient features of the proposed solution. The paper concludes with a snapshot of the potential need/drivers for GR- 303PNS and Wipro's role in driving standards on the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for realizing a standards based GR-303.
