Abstract
The MPEG1 Audio standard (ISO/IEC 11172-3) establishes the syntax and decoding process for compressed audio bit-streams. The standard has three distinct layers for compression depending on the amount of complexity and coding efficiency.

Layer 1 is the most basic compression algorithm, to compression. Layers 2 and 3 have increased complexity, making them more difficult to implement while at the same time allowing better quality at any level of compression.

The article further elaborates on the technical descriptions of the three layers.The applications of the product include Internet Audio and Streaming, Automobile Multimedia, DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting), Portable Audio Players and CD players.
