New insights on PC management: Benefits of controlled PC hardware diversity
Abstract Most IT managers have learned from experience that a high number of deployed PC hardware configurations1 creates a complex environment with high hardware-related support costs as well as high software qualification and deployment costs. But real-world data that quantifies how these costs change as a function of installed PC base complexity has been hard to come by, making it difficult to justify investments that would simplify the environment.
In a study sponsored by Intel, we analyzed core desktop PC complexity factors for 30 firms in a variety of industries. The following insights are based on a quantitative analysis of the potential benefits that can be derived from reducing complexity within a deployed base of desktop PCs.
