Custom operating kernels for DSPs: Design issues
Abstract
This paper presents some issues involved in designing a custom operating kernel for DSPs. It discusses the general design considerations of typical DSP application software with the help of a multi-media system software example and makes a case for building such applications within the framework of an operating system. It also discusses the gap between typical DSP capabilities and the support a kernel typically expects from a processor. The paper concludes by suggesting some methods at bridging the gap through software techniques.
