Abstract
Metadata is important for effective use of a data warehouse. It always existed with our data banks but the awareness on its use and making it available to the business users is what will make the difference. While metadata is not new, the role of metadata and its importance in the face of the data warehouse is certainly new. In today’s competitive environment when every company is looking for an edge over its competitors, building a Meta Data Repository is no longer an option, but an absolute requirement for improvements in business. Business community has realized that Metadata is not only crucial for the management of the IT applications but is also necessary for the effective use by the business end user.

This white paper discusses an approach developed while providing a customized metadata solution for a large data warehouse application of a utilities client of Wipro. The paper talks about the approach in a generic way so that it can be applied to any other data warehouse project. The business value that the solution has provided to the client has also been discussed and a comparison is given with the other available tools vis-à-vis features. The methodology proposed in this paper can be used in any customer centric data warehouse.
