Developing data warehouse parallel to source - A proven framework
Abstract
Organizations that plan their actions and strategies based on the knowledge captured in their data stores from past are the ones that promise real value to their customers and are muscular enough to handle the pressures of increasing competition; the rest would die at the hands of competition. In wake of the competition threatening to eat up the market share, business intelligence is becoming a standard business practice for companies the world over. Data warehousing offers an approach to significantly improve the information access problem faced by the users of organizations. It can greatly increase the level of productivity and improve the decision-making process of knowledge workers.
Traditionally data warehouses were planned and developed after the source systems were in place in an organization. But as the importance to analyze the data is growing and more transaction systems are being either re-planned or built from the scratch to support the business requirements, there is a need to re-look at the traditional approach followed in developing and implementing a Data Warehouse. This paper suggests an innovative approach and proposes a framework to design and develop a data warehouse in parallel with the transaction source systems.
