A primer on port operations: Trends & challenges
Abstract
The size and capacity of the largest container vessels continues to increase in response to the economies of scale in container ship operations, the strong growth in global container traffic, and the competitive pressures between shipping lines. This in turn drives the need for higher capacity terminals to meet the new demands. In addition, globalization of trade, mergers & acquisitions among the major shipping players has opened the doors for shipment of enormous amount of cargo through containers. This growth has also opened a can of worms for ports to efficiently manage the load and discharge the cargo with in the limited space and limited resources.
A closer look at the current state of port throws wide challenges for port authorities in managing the key ports more efficiently. This paper addresses the key trends and challenges for port operations and in particular about terminal management.
