Demand forecasting in the Apparel Sector

Abstract
Competition in most of market places has become stronger in recent years due to increased number of players in the market competing for the same customers. In the apparel industry, competition is increasing not only due to the number of players alone, but also due to contracting size of the whole market, changes in the industry scenario and changes in the macro economic conditions. These changes have had an effect on most of the operations of companies, particularly in the supply chain domain.

This white paper looks at the increased importance of demand forecasting within the supply chain function and the lack of systematic approach to it, in the apparel industry. It suggests an approach to demand forecasting in the apparel sector, in view of the changes the industry is facing. A high level view of the process is described, followed by a detailed discussion on the critical steps involved. The approach assumes that it would be supplemented by the use of software tools, and by higher collaboration between the players in the value chain.
