Customizing the 1394a physical layer IP core for a Taiwan customer
 
 

The customer
The client is one of Taiwan's largest and most successful fabless semiconductor companies and develops ICs and SOCs for communications networking, PC peripherals, digital imaging, and other applications, and is the world's number one provider of Ethernet and Fast Ethernet ICs. In 2001, the client was named as one of Forbes magazine's "International 200 Best Small Companies." It is located in Hsinchu, the "Silicon Valley" of Taiwan.

The challenge
The client had a 1394a Analog PHY. They wanted the 1394a Digital PHY from Wipro so that he can interface their 1394 Analog PHY to develop complete 1394a PHY chip and market it. The client had a special requirement regarding the registers which can be read or written from outside for configuring the analog design parameters. Their 1394a Analog PHY had 8 bit interface to the 1394a Digital PHY, where as the Wipro 1394a PHY had 1 bit (serial interface) to the 1394a Analog PHY.

The solution
Wipro provided the option of configurable 1394 Physical Layer IP where the 1394a Digital PHY can be configured to interface with the 1394a PHY in either serial mode (1 bit) or parallel mode (8 bit). Wipro also did customizations to the 1394a Digital PHY so that some parameters can be configured to suit to the Client 1394a Analog PHY. This helped the customer to use Transmit path interface with high speed logic in digital and Receive path interface with high speed logic in analog. Wipro also provided knowledge transfer on the PHY-LINK interface to the Client. Wipro provided the registers and the read write access through the test mode debug interface in the existing IP.

Wipro also provided the configurable ports option for 1394a Digital PHY where the number of ports can be configured to 1 to 3 ports.

Wipro has done integration of the 1394a PHY with the 1394a AVLINK IP so that the client can develop Integrated AVLINK chip for DVD writer market.

The benefits
The client is able to successfully Integrate Wipro’s 1394a Digital PHY IP with its own 1394a Analog IP along with the Wipro’s 1394a AVLINK IP. The 1394a Digital PHY is suitable for his future applications with either 1 bit or 8 bit interface. The Integrated testing of the 1394a AVLINK IP with the 1394a Digital PHY by Wipro also gave the Client time to market advantage.
