DTCP 5C solution with 1394 interface helps client launch a robust and high-performance Digital TV SoC

The customer
Our client is the world's leading digital media solution provider. The company has dedicated substantial resources in the research and development of comprehensive digital media integrated chipset solutions.

The challenge
Our client’s R&D group was working on development of a DTV SoC solution. Protection of digital entertainment content during all phases of distribution, transmission and playback was one of the critical requirements of the solution.

The DTCP 5C specification defines a cryptographic protocol for protecting audio/video entertainment content from unauthorized copying, intercepting and tampering as it traverses digital transmission media such as the high performance serial bus that conforms to the IEEE 1394 standard. The DTCP 5C specification relies on strong cryptographic technologies to provide flexible and robust copy protection across digital buses.

The client wanted a robust DTCP 5C protocol implementation for data encryption/decryption which was in full compliance with IEEE 1394 data transmission standards and that could be easily integrated with the other components of their DTV SoC solution.

The solution
Wipro had developed an efficient implementation of the DTCP 5C protocol. The solution had the following features which made it an attractive option for the client

Flexibility for modification
The hardware component (M6 algorithm) of the solution was in RTL (Register Transfer Logic) and gave the client support for high throughputs.
Ease of integration
The hardware (M6) and software components (AKE - Authentication and Key exchange) were developed in full compliance with the protocol requirements which ensured ease of integration. Integration issues such as resolving platform dependent issues and interfacing with other modules could be solved very easily.
High performance levels
The implementation had critical logic implemented at hardware level to meet real time processing constraints and ensure high performance levels

Successful interoperability testing
Wipro provided its expertise to resolve integration issues and devised the test set up for testing the protocol. The solution integrated with the client’s platform was interoperated with commercial devices available in market (RCA 1394 AV-HDD) and the testing was performed in a real-time environment.

The benefits
Market advantages
Availability of DTCP 5C implementation on the DTV SoC with 1394 interface has opened up many new market segments for the client. A number of emerging technologies can take advantage of the IEEE 1394 high speed digital interface including desktop computers, DVD players, digital televisions and digital set-top-box receivers.

Benefits for end-customer
DTCP 5C implementation is aimed at protecting the interests of content providers against piracy and at the same time allowing the consumers to copy the content legally.

DTCP 5C implementation relies on strong cryptographic technologies to provide flexible and robust copy protection against piracy of digital content during all phases of distribution, transmission and playback.

The transparent DTCP 5C framework allows consumers to enjoy high-quality digital pictures and sound without any noticeable performance or quality impact.
