Package implementation solution enables single window customer helpdesk for network operations staff leading to increased productivity

The customer
KVH Telecom is a telecommunications carrier in Japan. Through its leading-edge optical fiber networks it offers a comprehensive set of services for broadband data, high-speed internet access and data center needs to metropolitan business customers in Japan.

The challenge
KVH Telecom as part of its key business requirements was implementing Network Management System to monitor telecom and IDC equipment. When faults were received by the respective Element Management System the Network operations staff needed to manually check MS Excel sheets to identify the customers and the services that were impacted by the fault. It was imperative for KVH Telecom to enable its customer helpdesk staff use just one system to monitor their network. Key challenges involved:
The implemented solution needed to have very high availability which was possible by ensuring a single window to the customer helpdesk staff.
It was essential that smooth integration of the new system took place with existing enterprise systems and Operations Support Systems.

Wipro’s solution

Wipro implemented Micromuse Netcool suite of products to address service assurance needs. To meet the requirement of high availability, Omnibus, Impact and Probes servers were configured in an active stand by mode and tested for fail-over conditions. Impact Policies were written to access a flat file to display customer related data.

Customizations: Impact Policies were developed to correlate faults with customer related information. Slot / Port level correlation was implemented. This implied that in case a Node went down all the affected customers would be displayed as service events.
Interfaces: An EAI Interface using WebMethods was developed to access customer data and create trouble tickets.
Reports: The following Reports were configured

Daily count of events
Event Distribution based on NE
Event distribution based on criticality
Event distribution based on affected Customers and Services.

Business benefits
Single window operation for Customer Helpdesk
Implementation of a robust Netcool solution reduced all manual operations for Customer Helpdesk staff.
Customer helpdesk staff could monitor all equipment using only one solution.

Integration of implemented solution with existing enterprise software
Integration ensured that the service related information and customer related information for all critical and major events enriched the event.
Integration with Siebel for trouble tickets enabled faster customer service and sharper turnaround.

Customer feedback

“We are extremely pleased with Wipro’s performance during their Netcool Implementation at KVH Telecom. Wipro quickly captured the Business Users requirements and have proactively worked towards meeting these requirements. The team understood the concepts of Netcool and worked very hard, this has ensured that the Phase II implementation of the project has been successful. We now look forward to Wipro’s continued commitment in the next phase of the Netcool Implementation. We are confident that Wipro will continue to keep up the good work.”
