Server consolidation for a large insurance company in the US

Customer

Client is one of the leading insurance companies based in USA. Client had a proliferation of servers with a variety of Operating systems consisting of Solaris and AIX. The objective was to consolidate the servers and recommend a roadmap for movement to Linux OS.

Challenge

The environment included over 100 servers – Sun / IBM / Intel spread across 3 different data centers. The servers hosted a variety of Web and Database applications. They were configured as Web, Application and Database servers.

Solution

A project initiation meeting was conducted to gather information on Business Drivers, Pain areas, short term & long term goals. This was followed by an Assessment and Analysis of the various infrastructure and applications. This included:

Identifying and finalizing the list of candidate servers and hence the applications and tools deployed on them.
Studying the interdependencies of servers/applications, usage pattern of servers/applications and performance factors
Evaluating of the pros and cons of the different architectures arrived at.
Designing and recommending a target environment which met the business drivers of the project along with a roadmap of migration of applications and servers to Linux environment.

A proposal was provided with Bill of material, Financials and project execution timelines. The resultant architecture led to consolidation and reduction of storage/servers and standardized the operating systems and tools like AIX, Inktomi.

Benefits

Ease of administration - due to reduction in number of servers and deployment of latest Blade servers.
Increase in performance, since the latest Blade servers were more powerful than the original SUN servers.
New servers provide greater capacity & performance within the same footprint
Consolidation of around 20 external storage boxes to an existing EMC enterprise storage.
Number of servers reduced by 50%.
