The business challenge

Skandia makes use of an AS/ 400 system to process between 170,000 to 200,000 policies in single jobs related to the calculation of charges, reserve values and premium every month. During the peak hours the combination of large resource-demanding batch jobs and the interactive-user jobs made the system resources extremely low. Consequently, the response times of interactive-user applications decreased with the time per job being approximately 22 hours. This had a major impact on the daytime work/ activities of the client.

The solution

The Wipro team followed a structured process of analysis and design to come up with the parallel concept solution as outlined below:

	Code optimization & scheduling: This resulted in a 30 - 40% improvement in runtimes of the month-end batch jobs.
	Separating unused data from the main processing: This resulted in 30% improvements in runtimes compared to the existing runtimes for the month-end batch jobs.
	Implementing parallel concept in batch jobs: The team achieved timely completion of the development to take advantage of time and cost reduction and also ensured 30 to 50% improvements in the processing time.

	The improvement in processing time and the fact that monthly batch jobs can be scheduled to complete overnight has helped Skandia address its customer needs faster.
	The time taken to deduct charges for over 300,000 polices has decreased from 24 to 7 hours.
	The time taken to calculate reserve values for over 300,000 policies has decreased from 33 to 10 hours.
	The time taken to calculate payment of premiums for over 200,000 polices has decreased from 16 to 5 hours.
