Re-engineering a reporting application for a payer to improve efficiency and usability with ensured stability

Customer
The customer is consistently ranked among the top HMOs in the country for quality of care. They offer health care in New England area, primarily in Massachusetts. They offer an extensive network of over 24,000 affiliated providers, providers on staff, thousands of independent physician and group practices and 140 hospitals. The reporting system is an intranet based thin client three tiered application used to generate HEDIS (The Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set), GHAA (Group Health Administration Association) and other financial reports.

Challenge
This reporting application was initially developed by the client’s technical-savvy team. Due to budget constraints, a lot of freeware (without any vendor support) was used. The design of the application used multiple non-standard technologies which lead to a maintenance nightmare. To add to the worries, the original project team had left the company.

Solution

Reverse Engineering
In the reverse engineering phase, Wipro’s onsite team did a complete study of the client’s reporting system to understand the functionality, data and design of the application. This was followed by documentation of the design and other operational details. The team also prepared a maintenance plan to stabilize and maintain the application from offshore.

Reengineering
New features were added to the application to help the user department in generating reports with increased efficiency and ease.
Making the system more stable by recoding the entity management module using JavaScript instead of Java ORB.
Upgrading the user interface code written using Live Wire 1.0 to Client/Server side JavaScript.
Refining the job server, job monitor and print server modules such that the code does not have any memory and resource leaks, thus avoiding frequent system crashes.
Migrating the data from MS-SQL Server 4.5 on Windows NT 3.5 to MS-SQL Server 6.5 on Windows NT 4.0.

Benefits
All the above mentioned reports were mandatory and submitted to the regulatory agencies. The upgraded reporting system ensured accurate and timely report generation.
Wipro maintained the system from offshore with minimal client intervention thus allowing efficient human resource utilization for the client.
