Disaster Recovery Planning for a Government Organization

Business Challenge

The client is a government non-profit organization in UK. The organization was looking to implement strong DR practices in the IT services arm of the organization in order to provide a smooth and committed service to its internal clients.

Since the organization is a government organization, confidentiality and security of the data was very important. It was also necessary to protect the goodwill of the organization with its external vendors and departments. A downtime of the IT services would disrupt most of the online transactions and online information store the client hosts to its users. The client had Win NT servers, UNIX servers and also large local area networks. The organization was spread across multiple locations, which were interconnected by means of WAN links.

Some of the requirements were:
  • Providing near zero downtime for the business critical servers and network
  • Reduce the recovery time for the other servers which are less critical
  • Provide alternatives in the event of any failures
  • Identify various threats including security threats
  • Suggest best practices and guidelines to improve the operation and reduce failures
  • Architect and implement the solutions which provide cost-effective approach

Wipro Solution

Wipro was responsible for study of the entire IT services setup. The study covered all the locations of the organization, the LAN setup, WAN links connecting each of the locations and business critical servers and functions. The business threats to the resources were identified through data collection by interaction with the system administrators and IT technical personnel. The review of the data was done at every stage to fool proof the collected data. A very structured, scientific Risk Analysis and Business Impact Analysis (BIA) was conducted on the data collected and critical resources were classified with the list of threats. For each of the resources, multiple solutions were designed with Cost Vs Benefit analysis. The recommended and chosen solutions were later implemented. The DR plan is being constantly updated and monitored to maintain it in current status.

Benefits
Client could identify lot of hidden threats during the project and is now well equipped to handle those threats. The setup can now handle any eventualities and can provide faster recovery to resources in the event of any disasters.
