Developing a Global Securities Database (GSD) for a pre-eminent global financial services firm

Client
The client is a pre-eminent global financial services company and a market leader in securities, asset management. The Company has offices in London, Tokyo and other principal financial centers around the world.

Challenge

The client intends to have a Global Reference Data Warehouse (RDW) to support their multiple downstream applications with the objectives of receiving, validating, updating the data to support all downstream systems and publishing validated data to middleware.

Data sources for the envisaged RDW would be:
Third Party Information Provider (one or many)
Internal Systems (one or many)
Internal Users (on line manual entry)

The client also intends to have an independent error handling system to streamline the error handling mechanism for various application systems including RDW.

Solution
Wipro Technologies proposed to build the Reference Data Warehouse that would have the following functionality:
Issue Maintenance: This system should allow the maintenance of all Issue types. Issue maintenance function should allow add, modify, inquiry and logical deletion (on expiry date or any other event related to the particular Issue) for all types of issue in addition to manual deletion.
Price Maintenance and re-denomination: The system should be able to capture and store all price-related information inclusive of interest rates and indices.
Data Quality Management: Data from source systems will be validated on predefined business rules /validation, which may include tolerance level, defined in the database. In general, data, which violates the validation /business rules will be marked 'suspect status'.
Business Partners and Roles Management: The client being the leader in its business interacts with many external institutions for various business related process. These include financial organizations performing service to the client such as Exchanges, clearing agents, market data vendors. Organizations also include clients and trading counter parties.
Time Zones: Calendars and Geographic Units Management: Since users would access the system across continents, time zone and calendar management becomes important.
Reporting: The pre-canned reports about the data stored in the RDW are produced using the reporting tool Crystal Reports 8.0.

Benefits

The project would help achieve the consolidation and distribution of global operational referential data that will eliminate the errors and synchronization problems introduced by the existing manual reconciliation process. The consolidation is expected to result in substantial savings by eliminating trade errors.

Technical Environment
Wipro proposed a three-tier architecture providing different layers for presentation, business logic and data storage that is based on J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) technologies.
The salient features of the proposed solution are :
Solution based on latest technologies.
Highly Scalable architecture to take care of future increase in load.
Component based solution to add/modify/delete functionality to/from the system.
Solution portable across platforms.
Reliable solution able to perform under stress.

This architecture leverages the capabilities of web server and application server for scalability, security, reliability and high performance. It uses platform independent technologies compliant with the J2EE model.
