Developing a comprehensive warehouse management solution

The Customer
Our customer is a leading sports-good manufacturer and retailer

The Challenge
The customer had a completely automated warehouse in Japan to cater to the needs of the entire Asia Pacific region. The new facility was designed to support a combined annual throughput of approximately 43 million shippable units. The sales activity across their products will peak at approximately 22,500 Stock Keeping Units. The Warehouse Management Application was a multi-site project spanning across 4 countries (Japan, the USA, Belgium and India) in 3 different continents. The challenge was to manage the multi-site, multi-lingual project while ensuring realization in 100% accuracy in areas like inventory stored and shipment information.

The Solution

We deployed a team to study the customer's entire Supply Chain and map it to the best practices in the industry. Using our large project, management expertise the Warehouse Management Solution was customized to customer's requirements.

This customized application was developed across four countries, with the majority of the work done in a dedicated Offshore Development Center in India. We introduced its SEI CMM Level 5 Software Development methodology and integrated with the customer's development model in every phase of the project to ensure process compliance and consistency. This was critical as the development was taking place concurrently across the globe.

A fast team ramp-up to 60 consultants in 45 days resulted in a total number of 1200 Applications being designed, developed, tested and delivered. We developed Test Plans and supported testing of various Interfaces with Material Handling Systems (MHS), Order Management Systems (OMS), Financial Systems and Carrier Systems. The team customized the Warehouse Management System's web-based issues management tool, which was extensively used in systems integration testing and the Go-Live phase of the project.

The new fully automated facility has increased inventory and shipment accuracy. There have also been significant cost savings due to the successful deployment of our onsite-offshore development methodology.
