Case Study

Enterprise Wide Data warehouse that provides easy access to strategic and operational information

The idea
Design and develop an Enterprise-wide Data warehouse (EDW) that provides easy access to strategic and operational information.

The client
One of the leading food distributors in the US, marketing and distributing private and signature brand products across America. The client has a strong base of national customers as well as independent and local/regional chains including food service customers like hotels, restaurants, healthcare facilities, cafeterias, schools, and individual grocery stores.

Before
The food distribution industry was changing rapidly with new channels to reach the customer and at the same time adhere with new regulations. The client needed to change its existing systems to adapt to such a dynamic business environment. So, the client required an independent assessment on the current state of data warehouse systems from an external agency that has vast experience in many data warehouse and operational data store project implementations. Also, the client had multiple decision support systems spreading across the organization. This multitude of decision support systems was resulting in higher support and maintenance costs to the client. The most important requirement was to integrate various data warehouses and build an Enterprise-wide Data warehouse (EDW).

How Wipro helped

Wipro primarily helped the client in assessing the current data warehouse architecture, preparing a roadmap for an EDW and implementing the same using our Global Delivery Model (GDM).

The consultants from Wipro analyzed the existing systems and benchmarked them with the best in-class industry implementations. The study focused on customer’s business issues, information needs, architecture strategy and key processes involved. Wipro provided the client with an assessment findings report that highlighted the gaps which need to be addressed for a successful data warehouse program. The assessment study was complemented by our architecture principles and best practice sessions with the client. Based on the assessment, the Wipro team prepared a roadmap for implementation of enterprise-wide data warehouse. The recommendations included long-term future state data warehouse architecture and approach as well as short-term ‘quick win’ initiatives.

The second part of the engagement involved designing an enterprise-wide data warehouse that can integrate data from various existing operational sources. The engagement with Wipro helped the client to choose an appropriate ETL tool out of the various options available in the market. The data warehouse can accommodate 7 years of historic data and the design is flexible enough to accommodate future requirements. The design also ensures availability of integrated data and retrieves current day sales data.

After
A scaleable, flexible data architecture and process inline with the industry best practices
Step-by-step roadmap for an EDW implementation leading to reduced learning curve and a leap forward in terms of time-frame
Standardized customer and product information resulting in higher productivity and efficiency
Duplication of data in multiple systems is eliminated leading to low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of IT systems
