Large transmission operator : Established a wholesale energy market by using webservices and SOA technology

The client

An independent transmission system operator that serves the electrical transmission needs of the Midwest United States

The challenge

The client wanted to implement a comprehensive data exchange infrastructure that would allow all the Regional Transmission operators to exchange operational information in real time and establish a common whole sale energy market.

As part of the project scope Wipro had to deploy a platform that allowed the customer and the other Regional Transmission operators to have real time communication to exchange load forecast, real time operational information, outage occurrence of any generator, management and visibility into each other grid operations.

The data exchange ( DEx) project deployed by Wipro had to be support the data exchange initiatives defined in the Joint operator agreement ( JOA ) between customer and the other operators. The JOA DEx was aligned with the development of a common energy market to support the market to market co-ordination between CUSTOMER and PJM and any operators.

The customer also had a need to expose public Market data to their Stakeholders and Market Participants to enable increased market transparency and participation in the energy market.

The solution
Wipro was responsible for implementing a Web Services-based architecture to address data exchange requirements with the customer and other operator to improve reliability coordination and interoperability across market seams. Wipro implemented the Data Exchange business processes and automated Web Services flows leveraging key components of the TIBCO integration platform (Adapters, Rendezvous messaging, BusinessWorks, PortalBuilder, and Hawk). The TIBCO BusinessWorks environment is used for automation of the required extraction, aggregation, and transformation of critical MISO Operations and IT data. The BusinessWorks environment was also used to develop, generate, and expose the external facing XML components to support Web Services data exchange

Business benefits
The client derived the following benefits after the implementation of a common information infrastructure
Improved the reliability coordination and interoperability across market seams
Production implementation of first Inter-RTO Web Services Data Exchange in the ISO Space
Established the overarching technical architecture, infrastructure, and protocols required to exchange data with other external entities via Web Services
Development and implementation of a standard-based, non-proprietary Web Services solution for exchanging operations data between entities
Development and implementation of reusable business process, portal components, and common XML schema definitions
Flexibility and extensibility to bring on additional Market and Non-Market-based data exchange partners with reduced development effort and cost
