186K: With WiproWebsecure™ 186K becomes the first telecom service provider in UK to deliver web enabled telecom services
 
 
The customer

186K is the telecommunication subsidiary of the Lattice Group, a FTSE 100 company. An infrastructure comprising of a 2000 km optical fiber network has enabled 186K to create a state-of-theart, end-to-end Internet Protocol network to provide carriers, Internet Service Providers with highly flexible telecoms and data services. 186K offers near infinite capacity, new levels of commitment to customer service and serious reliability. The result is technology and services that meet individual business needs, both for now and for the future.

With a vision of becoming UK's leading broadband service provider, 186K wanted to differentiate itself through a combination of innovative products, time-to market, customer intimacy and operational excellence for the following segments:

One of the cornerstones of 186K's plans to achieve their vision is the adoption of Information Systems & Technology. The objective being to power its business by leveraging on appropriate, strong and flexible IT systems.

To achieve this, it intended to offer value added services to its customers through a technology driven project termed as "Operation Support and Business Support System Services" (OSS/BSS).

The system handles all the business processes of 186K that includes

By web enabling the telecom solutions and bringing the customers closer to it, 186K wanted to be a step ahead of its competitors. The system being a critical component in the infrastructure of the company, needed to have a fool proofsecurity framework. In order to web enable the products and services in a secure manner, 186K had the following main requirements in mind:
A secure channel of communication from the client browser to the 186K Web Portal.
Unique user id/Password combination for authenticating and authorizing every user.
A secure Web Single Sign On and Single Sign Off framework and solution for all (but not limited) the following applications
ATG Dynamo Application Server.
Clarify - A CRM Product.
NetCool Reporter - A Network Fault management Reporting Tool.
Nexus Power and Performance Meter - A Network Performance Reporting Tool.
 
The solution

Wipro was given the sole responsibility of designing, developing and managing the security framework of the entire OSS/BSS system. This encompassed implementing technology solutions to all the business processes using Data Warehousing and Data Mining.

As a part of the entire solution, WiproWebsecure™ was implemented to secure and manage the users, resources and applications of the OSS/BSS system. WiproWebsecure™ is an Extranet Secure user Access Management product that provides an easily deployable solution for all the security requirements of an enterprise.

 
Key benefits
Improved customer satisfaction
186K was able to position itself as a more customer friendly telecom service provider by opening its resources to the external without any security threat.
Through Single Sign On, the set of applications to which user has access to, is determined. The user is then seamlessly signed on to those applications.

Time to market
The project was completed in a time span of 10 months leveraging WiproWebsecure'sTM modular architecture. This enabled 186K to capitalize on the benefits of an early entrant in the market.
Strong authentication mechanisms like Time of the Day login features enabled 186K to attract newer customers by providing the highest level of security.

Centralised stringent security
Wipro WebsecureTM enabled 186K to achieve an extended unified security model for all their existing and future applications.
The site received the highest security level rating from an ethical hacking company.

Cost savings
Single Sign On reduces the issue of users forgetting or loosing passwords. The amount of effort spent by the administrators and help desk staff thus came down substantially.
186K achieved high cost savings as the necessity of increasing help desk personnel with growth in business was removed.
