Integrating 7 distinct financial applications for a well established Swedish insurance company

The client
The client is a multinational firm providing solutions for long-term savings. Initially established in Sweden, the client has expanded to 20 countries with sales exceeding SEK 98 Billion. Its current employee strength is 5,800.

The business challenge
The client had increased its geographical spread considerably in the past few years. This had led to disparate processes being followed across its various business units. Transaction costs between units were very high and it was not able to reap the advantages of being a global corporation. Consolidation of business processes was therefore a key initiative for the client at this point.

A key component of this initiative was its financials module which currently ran on JDE WorldSoft A7.3. However, seven such implementations existed in the organization, all performing the same function but in a different manner. To integrate these applications, the client had decided to implement financials on a common JDE OneWorld Xe platform. This version of JDE would also enable it to automate some of the current processes thereby reducing administrative costs.

The solution
The client chose Wipro to perform this entire financials integration process. The primary task of this engagement was development of interfaces, work flows, data conversions and extensions to integrate all systems with OneWorld Xe.

One of the most critical components of the Knowledge Acquisition Process (KAP) was understanding the way the seven different modules functioned. Our team’s experience in handling financial services projects helped them quickly understand the existing system.

This information was then combined with end-user requirements. Based on these requirements and analysis of current processes, a detailed migration and integration strategy was developed. The three main components of this plan were:

JDE integration: Customized interfaces were designed to integrate each of the seven systems. Batch applications were then developed to implement these interfaces
JDE development: As part of this process, data conversion was carried out to make it compatible with the format in which it would be stored in the common system
JDE migration: Some of the customizations built in the existing systems were part of business requirements. During migration, these customizations were reapplied to JDE OneWorld

Benefits
Tighter integration between financial applications reduced administrative costs and enabled to client to provide an integrated service to its customers
Areas of concern in the process framework as well as technical problems in the existing system were resolved satisfactorily
Re-usable components and templates provided by Wipro’s JDE Centre of Excellence (CoE) enabled faster implementation of this project
Key issues were documented and made easily accessible to ensure easier resolution of these difficulties at a later stage
