Using round-the-clock support to enhance competitiveness of products. Provide integration capabilities with acquired companies

The client
The client is among the world's largest providers of tailored learning solutions. It operates from 42 countries with turn over of $ 2.3 billion and employs 12300 people.

In the academic marketplace, it serves secondary, post-secondary and graduate-level students, teachers, and learning institutions in both traditional and distance learning environments. In the professional and corporate training marketplaces, it offers adult education and certification materials for corporations, training centers and individuals.

The business challenge
The client’s niche in the learning solutions market was developing highly customized educational packages for a variety of clients. Having oriented its processes towards delivering such solutions, the client now sought productivity improvements and reduced maintenance costs of the JDE platform supporting these processes. This would help it raise the competitiveness of its products and also increase profit margins.

In addition, the client was pursuing a very aggressive acquisition strategy. It therefore wanted its JDE applications, especially Financials, to be geared to handle all the integration challenges.

The solution
Wipro was chosen as the partner to provide development and maintenance support for the following areas:
JDE order fulfillment
JDE finance
Financial integration projects
Royalties
Log-Pro system

Our team implemented Wipro’s proven Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) methodology to execute these functions. As part of this methodology, the Application Support Framework was built around four stages, viz.

Planning and diagnostics: During this stage, we worked in collaboration with the client’s technical team of devise a comprehensive engagement plan
Transition: This phase involved initial Knowledge Acquisition, documentation of client processes and gradual transfer of maintenance activities to our support team
Steady state: Complete call based support through the use of our Global Delivery Model had been achieved by this stage. Our team was also involved in resource consolidation and continuous reporting of project status to client account managers
Continuous improvement: Productivity improvements and process consolidation were the primary initiatives during this phase. A quarterly review process was conducted to gauge the progress of these initiatives

An offshore development centre (ODC) was established where parallel execution of Financial Integration Projects (FIPs) was taking place.

A highlight of this project was our team developing a reusable customization parsing tool to identify all business critical application modifications carried out on the client’s JD Edwards enterprise system. Our team also developed and delivered 27 business process documents based on the as is status of the applications.

Currently, Wipro is leading the effort, from inception, of a Multi-Language implementation project to enable the client’s JDE Enterprise system to be capable of supporting various European languages apart from English.

Benefits
Use of the global delivery model has ensured worldwide, 24 * 7 support to client’s employees. Round-the-clock employee response leading to faster customer service has added a valuable supplement to client’s already existing strength of providing customized solutions.
The parsing tool developed by our team helped the client review and make changes to some key processes it had modified. If required, it could also build on these changes thereby providing higher adaptability to changing scenarios
The FIP function was crucial in integration acquired companies with existing systems. This system was particularly useful during ensuring compliance with acquisition norms that were brought about by new regulations
Periodic reporting of project details in form of weekly and quarterly evaluation has enabled to client to continually review the ROI of this project
