Enabling faster and more informed decision making by developing web based tool for logistics function
 

The client
The client, subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company, is the world’s largest manufacturer of elevators, escalators, moving walks, and other horizontal transportation systems. A strong linkage with its parent gives it significant resources in engineering, product testing, purchasing, marketing and information systems. It currently has 1.7 million elevators and 110,000 escalators in operation in more than 200 countries around the world.
 
The challenge
Increased competition, especially in the elevator segment had caused the client to look at ways to enhance its operational efficiency. This would not only help improve customer service but would reduce administrative costs considerably.

The client also wanted to improve its information system to enable faster decision making. This initiative would require faster access to information as well as developing automated systems that would provide more relevant data to managers.

As a solution to both these requirements, the client had decided to implement an online flexible tool on JD Edwards platform that would provide information to management by interacting seamlessly with its complete supply chain and logistics. A key requirement of this project was extending this solution to its parent and supplier base across the globe. The client needed a partner who would be able to take complete ownership for the rapid development and deployment of interfaces, work flows, conversions and extensions.

 
The solution
Our team performed a comprehensive knowledge acquisition process at the beginning. Schematics of all the business processes were drawn from proper understanding of the various client transactions. OTIS business analysts were involved during this stage to provide a background on business requirements based on which this processes had been established.

The next phase was designing the various interfaces and customizations followed by their implementation. The key aspects of this process were:

Security implementation: Definition and implementation of security methodology for applications and one world portal security and portal administration
Integration: JD Edwards Integration with e-logistics sales module (e- Direct system), CLC, MRP & WMS, field office and financial systems .The integration was done XPI and webMethods 6.0
Document generation: Design and development of a document generation tool using ASP/XML
Information Tool: An online tool was developed that provides information about optimizing order management, logistics and field installation of new equipment. The views of this tool had been customized for sales reps, suppliers, customers, job site engineers, field supervisors etc

During the last phase, these applications were tested thoroughly. End-user recommendations were sought and implemented to increase the usability of these applications.

High amount of information availability with ease of access enabled better control of the client’s supply chain and helped it make faster and more informed decisions
Information security was now much more robust with user roles defining the kind of information presented to them
Business gaps in the current system were addressed by developing new work flows
Errors in information reporting was significantly reduced due to decreased manual intervention
