VPLS solution on Intel® IXP 2400™ network processor

Abstract
Present day telecommunication industry innovations are mainly driven by two major requirements, one - the convergence in the consumer electronic devices to provide network enabled services and two – the business growth beyond the geographical boundaries which requires multi-point connectivity; making enterprise LANs in multiple sites appear as if they are on the same LAN. Both these requirements have a common major need which is delivering “Triple play”, an optimized pre-certified end-to-end voice video and data solutions.

Wipro has developed a solution which answers the networking needs of the above mentioned requirements by harnessing the best features of the two major technologies in the present day market. One – a Network Processor (NP) based solution which gives a flexible and robust solution for fast path processing and the second - Layer 2 MPLS based services(3), which support LAN and legacy traffic, and are lower cost and simpler to manage. Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a fast growing Layer 2 MPLS based service that answers the need of multi-point connectivity. This paper looks at the two fastest growing technologies NP and VPLS. It provides the features of the Wipro VPLS solution on Intel® IXP2400™ NP(2) based development platform. The paper presents the advantages and benefits of Wipro VPLS solution that gives an edge over other VPLS solutions.
