Abstract
Telematics is the emerging industry of delivering value
added services related to safety, security, information
and entertainment directly to automobiles using wireless
technology. The automotive OEMs are interested in providing
such services, as it would act as an effective CRM tool
and also generate a continuous stream of revenue. GM
Onstar is a good example of a telematics service provider
in North America.
According to the Strategis Group, the number of worldwide
telematics subscribers is expected to grow to 30 million
by 2008, from just about 200,000 in 1999. The key to
delivering these services seamlessly across all networks
and vehicles would be the availability of a common standard
or platform for the delivery of services to the car.
One such emerging standard is Open Services Gateway
Initiative (OSGi), whose primary goal is to define and
foster rapid adoption of open specifications for the
delivery of managed broadband services to networks in
homes, cars and other environments. This white paper
proposes an architecture for a telematics system based
on OSGi. It discusses in detail both the client &
server side architectures.
