Abstract
Six Sigma can be described as a methodical and data
driven approach to eliminating defects in any process.
Six Sigma is a measure of quality that can be applied
in any organization involved in the manufacturing, IT
or Services industry. It’s about driving down
deviations from expected specifications of a product,
process or service to near zero through a rigorous method
of continuous improvement. In statistical terms it means
that a product, process or service should not have more
than 3.4 defects per million units of output. Six Sigma
methodologies can thus be used for improving any kind
of processes. One such process is the returns management
process which is a significant management challenge
to the High Tech and Consumer Electronics industry.
This white paper intends to highlight
the application of Six Sigma techniques to the returned
goods management activities in a high tech manufacturing
enterprise. It identifies areas in the process that
could benefit most and suggests an approach to plan
and implement a systematic program to harness tangible
business benefits from the exercise.
