| Abstract
The maritime industry has been slow in adapting to the
web and e-commerce to effectively integrate and improve
multi-modal logistics operations. With cost and operational
efficiency being key drivers, shipping and port operations
have turned to the web and the Internet for assistance.
With the global ocean freight market sized at USD 150
billion, the potential savings introduced by the effective
use of web-based systems is in the range of 33- 50%.
To achieve these savings, the shipping and port industry
will have to rapidly adopt the latest developments in
information, computing and communications technology,
and assure effective closer integration of their customers
into the decision chain in logistics management.
This white paper describes in brief
the trends, issues and the potential of web-based technology
for reducing cost and increasing process efficiencies
within the maritime industry and oil tanker industry
at large.
