Implementing IEEE 1073 framework for bedside patient monitoring in hospital environment
 
 

Abstract
The IEEE 1073 standard developed for communication between medical devices provides clinicians to link patient connected bedside medical devices to a bedside patient monitoring device or a computer network in a very simple and standard manner.

This white paper describes a generic and scalable framework which can be used to implement the IEEE 1073 stack. The framework covers the application, presentation and session layers as defined by the standard and does not delve into the details of implementing a reliable data transport mechanism. It is assumed that data transport would be achieved using technologies such as Infra Red, Radio frequency or TCP/IP. Interfacing of existing patient monitoring devices with the IEEE1073 stack is also presented in the paper.
