Abstract
With the advent of smart field devices in industrial automation, information about these field devices can permeate throughout the plant and business management. With different protocols (such as CIP, Profinet) to connect the fieldbus protocol such as Devicenet, ControlNet, Profibus to the Internet, there is no common platform to develop applications for these fieldbus protocols.

The OPC technology provides uniform interfaces for industrial applications to communicate with different field bus protocols. The interface between OPC and MES/Enterprise application needs to be addressed to bridge the gap between real time shop floor data to the enterprise data. Different solutions to address the above-mentioned needs are discussed in this paper. Wipro’s XML2OPC solution for remote monitoring and control is also explained.
