OPC server selection based on performance analysis
 
 

Abstract
A wide range of OPC servers are available for industrial devices like PLC s, Smart Control-lers and Sensors. Industrial Applications generally use an OPC server to facilitate communi-cation with field devices or controllers. Multiple vendors offer a range of OPC servers for a particular device. These OPC Servers (for a given device) may display identical features in their technical specifications; but in practice they differ in actual performance with respect to each other. It becomes very important to select the right server based on the performance requirement of user application. In principle, all the OPC servers should exhibit consistent and reasonable behavior. In reality, this may not be true and under certain scenarios some OPC servers outweigh others because of different software architectures. These software architectures are not transparent to end user hence it is necessary to evaluate server perfor-mance before deployment as it may impact the overall system performance.
