Abstract
SONET has been the predominant choice amongst carrier
networks to carry their traffic. The term Next Generation
SONET is typically used to denote the evolution of SONET
to cater to the current needs of carrier networks. This
paper aims to analyze the evolution, drivers, fitment
in service provider networks and the technologies involved
and standards that are involved in Next Generation SONET.
A brief on probable alternatives is also discussed.
