Abstract
Today, location based services (LBS) are becoming quite
popular in wireless networks. Innovative applications
in the areas of navigation, tracking, location based
advertising etc. are providing good revenue resources
to operators. Simultaneously there are improvements
taking place in positioning techniques. Both network
based and handset based positioning techniques are improving
in accuracy and cost efficiency. However, today location
data is mainly used for providing application services.
Operation of the network or the handset itself does
not depend on mobile terminal location information.
It is possible to use location information effectively
to improve efficiency of wireless networks, thereby
providing better quality of service (QoS) to users.
This white paper describes how location information
can be used for improving performance of mobile wireless
networks and explains the impact of this on the architecture
of future networks. Some familiarity with 3G wireless
networks is assumed here and hence all the concepts
are not explained in the paper.
