Abstract
JPEG2000 is a relatively new image compression standard
and it’s yet to find widespread acceptance. As
a compression standard, JPEG2000 is much superior to
JPEG; however, whether JPEG2000 will establish itself
over JPEG remains to be seen. JPEG just compresses an
image into as few bits as possible; JPEG2000 has a much
broader view of Image compression. It brings in factors
like support for lossless compression, higher transmission
error resilience, and finer control over the size vs.
quality tradeoff.
This white paper presents a developer’s perspective
of the JPEG2000 standard. It addresses the problems
one is likely to come across while trying to implement
the standard. The paper basically documents the experiences
gained while trying to implement Part-I of the JPEG2000
standard.
