Abstract
Local time corresponding to a particular time zone is
calculated by adding UTC (Coordinated Universal Time),
previously known as GMT, to the displacement of the
time zone from UTC. Until recently most of the ERP packages
and databases did not have the necessary built in features
to capture the time zone information along with the
time. Oracle Applications Release 11.5.8 and Oracle
9i onwards Oracle has provided additional features to
capture this critical information. However supporting
time zones in an ERP suite turns out to be much more
complicated than it appears to be. Oracle Applications
suite consists of various different technologies across
a gamut of business domains, each of which could potentially
have a very different impact of this change, hence making
this change as a whole quite unpredictable.
This white paper explains the usage of time zone feature
for Oracle Applications Implementation Projects, where
difference in time zone will cause a major impact on
the usage of the product. It explains what a time zone
is, various problems in having different time zones
and how Oracle supports various time zones.
