Abstract
Developments of smart field devices have advanced the
scope of Industrial Automa-tion further. These varied
techniques have made it possible to transfer the informa-tion
about these devices efficiently throughout the plant,
thereby enhancing the process of business management.
OPC (OLE for Process Control) provides a standard
mechanism for communicating to these smart field devices,
where OLE is Object Linking and Embedding. OPC depends
more or less on Microsoft Component based technology.
Today, there are many OPC COM (Component Object Model)
servers available in the market for utilizing these
Industrial field devices efficiently. This paper proposes
a Generic OPC Client for the OPC Data Access Server
to take advantage of this technology to the fullest
extent. The requirements and architecture for this Generic
OPC Client is also described. This generic client can
be developed in C++ to utilize the efficiency of the
OPC custom interfaces.
